Kitāb al-Zuhd is a foundational early Shīʿī work on the concept of detachment (zuhd), offering a structured engagement with the ethical and spiritual teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (as). Rather than advocating withdrawal from society, the text articulates a theology of inward detachment, in which the believer remains socially engaged while orienting the heart entirely towards Allah (swt).
The compiler, al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd al-Ahwāzī, is among the distinguished transmitters of the third Islamic century and a recognised companion of Imam al-Riḍā (as), Imam al-Jawād (as), and Imam al-Hādī (as). His proximity to the Imams (as), and his role within the early transmission networks of Shīʿī ḥadīth, lend this work particular historical and doctrinal significance.
The text comprises a curated selection of narrations from the Infallible Imams (as), thematically organised around key aspects of spiritual discipline, including detachment from worldly excess, remembrance of the Hereafter, moral self-regulation, and the cultivation of piety (taqwā). It reflects an early articulation of Islamic ethical thought, in which zuhd is understood not as ascetic negation, but as disciplined prioritisation of the eternal over the ephemeral.
This English translation by Tahir Ridha Jaffer presents the work in an accessible yet faithful manner, preserving its conceptual depth while making it available to contemporary readers. As such, it serves both as a primary source for the study of early Shīʿī spirituality and as a practical manual for ethical refinement.
